A mí una de las cosas que más me han gustado del trabajo de Àngel Casas fue La Pàgina Rosa, una sección que ocupaba una página entera del semanario TeleEstel –publicado en catalán a fines de los 60– y que estaba completamente entintada de color rosa. Con un diseño totalmente independiente de la publicación, siguiendo una línea gráfica entre psicodelia y moda Borsalino, publicaba breves de actualidad sobre las cosas que pasaban en el Tuset Street de la época que querían ser, y lo eran, modernas, estilosas y trendy. Pretendía llamar la atención sobre aquel reducto emergente de Barcelona que agrupaba agencias publicitarias, locales de entretenimiento y tiendas de moda y aspiraba a ser la Carnaby Street londinense (de ahí el nombre) de la mano de figuras del rock y la minifalda. Eran los finales de la década de los 60, época y estética del Yellow Submarine.
Y ya ves tu qué tontería: una serie de textos que mezclaban la crónica de sociedad, la ironía frívolo-ciudadana, los tips culturales y lo que ahora se llama branded content, es decir, una forma amable de publicidad encubierta. Aprendías sobre quién era Marianne Faithfull, la musa de Mick Jagger, y que había un cantante mallorquín negro que cantaba en catalán y se llamaba Guillem d’Efak.
La Página Rosa la firmaba y la redactaba un chico proveniente del mundo de la publicidad, un periodista que no tenía nada que ver con las redacciones sobrecargadas de humo y de política y que escribía de manera ágil y comprensible: un redactor creativo con vocación periodística, sin prejuicios y en un tiempo y un ambiente en el que en las agencias publicitarias trabajaban y mandaban gente como Joan Oliver (el poeta Pere Quart autor de las Corrandes d’exili), el crítico de arte Alexandre Cirici–Pellicer, historiador y animador de las artes plásticas, o Josep Maria Espinàs, divulgador primigenio de las estrategias de intercomunicación personal de Dale Carnegie, autor del bestseller Cómo ganar amigos o las técnicas de lectura rápida.
Comento estos detallitos porque a esta primera trinchera de Àngel ya figuraban los elementos que le caracterizarían. Creo que el Àngel Casas espabilado, irónico, observador y detector de tendencias que hemos disfrutado gracias a su ingente y meritoria tarea profesional, era fruto de una capacidad de combinar registros muy diversos y no menospreciar ninguno.
La revista Fotogramas, más tarde, nos lo mostró en una dimensión más amplia y ambiciosa, como crítico, cronista y entrevistador, y finalmente, con Vibraciones demostró que era posible hacer una Rolling Stone en España –con los magníficos reportajes fotográficos de Francesc Fàbregas— y con contenido de calidad e independencia de criterio. La independencia se la ganó Àngel en un momento en el cual el negocio discográfico era tan enorme que los comentaristas que no recibían sobornos de editoras o managers se podían contar con los dedos de dos manos, sino de una, y Àngel Casas era uno de ellos.
La alianza de Àngel Casas con los críticos musicales independientes y honestos de Madrid (Moncho Alpuente, Carlos Tena, Jesús Ordovás, Diego Manrique, Ramón Trecet, José Ramón Pardo) y de Barcelona (Jordi Garcia-Soler, Albert Mallofré, entre otros) mostró que una cosa era la frivolidad pop y otra muy distinta la mangancia (forma hoy en desuso del verbo mangar: chorizar). Con programas como Pop Grama y Musical Express en TVE y luego Àngel Casas Show en TV3 culminó una trayectoria de dedicación al entretenimiento popular digno y de cualidad, que firmó, intencionadamente, con la presentación de la stripper Christa Leem en la televisión pública catalana, con la bendición del poeta Joan Brossa.
Si hacemos, como corresponde ahora, una revisión retrospectiva, de la labor hecha por Àngel Casas, hallaremos siempre como trasfondo que nunca daba puntada sin hilo. ¿Pero quién soy yo para valorar el trabajo de un compañero? Lo que me toca es considerar otra cosa: Àngel Casas era un comunicador que, si lo seguías de cerca, podías estar al corriente de hacia dónde iban las tendencias de la sociedad. Él y muchos otros formaron una generación que definía el momento y la orientación de la vida cotidiana de un país, por lo que respecta a las costumbres y la cultura y lo sabía comunicar de manera directa, comprensible y entretenida. No es poca cosa.
Àngel ya no está para hacerlo. ¿Quién está ahora que lo pueda hacer?
Y sin hacernos pasar vergüenza, con el ánimo de entretenernos un poco e ilustrarnos con toda la dignidad del mundo. Géneros frívolos, les llaman. Va, hombre, va. Releeré La Pàgina Rosa cincuenta años después, a ver qué aprendo.
