Éste es el perfil de profesional de la medicina que le gustaría encontrar a la mayoría de ciudadanos y ciudadanas que han participado en el primer estudio del estado español sobre cómo deben ser los médicos y médicas del futuro.
Según esta muestra –formada por gente de distintas edades, sexos o procedencias–, los médicos actuales disponen de poco tiempo para cada uno de sus pacientes, tienen muchas capacidades pero una visión muy específica de la enfermedad y echan de menos más atención a la salud mental y emocional. También destacan que no hay demasiada sinergia entre los distintos especialistas y creen que los profesionales actuales se centran, sobre todo, en diagnosticar y tratar. Ante esta perspectiva, consideran que en un futuro, con una sociedad mucho más envejecida y con más pacientes pluripatológicos (con más de una enfermedad), se debería otorgar un papel más relevante a la prevención –poner las herramientas para que no aparezca la enfermedad– y que los profesionales de la medicina tengan una visión más holística del paciente y competencias humanísticas. Sin embargo, ven igualmente interesante que los médicos y médicas dispongan de ciertos conocimientos tecnológicos, con el fin de que la tecnología les sirva para mejorar la atención y que les dé más tiempo para tratar los aspectos más humanos.
La información que se desprende del estudio ya se está utilizando, en el caso de la Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF), para adaptar el grado de medicina a las necesidades de la población; un ejemplo es la incorporación de la asignatura de Humanismo en medicina. En este sentido, Joan Ramon Masclans, decano de la Facultad de Medicina y Ciencias de la Vida de la UPF y jefe del Servicio de Medicina Intensiva del Hospital del Mar, apuntó que otro de los cambios que se llevará a cabo en estos estudios será reforzar la formación de los estudiantes para que aprendan a gestionar los errores médicos y no los “rehuyan”, y también se quiere establecer un módulo obligatorio para los estudiantes en el que se realicen casos prácticos sobre cómo abordar un mal diagnóstico. En salud mental, añadió, “ya teníamos previsto reforzar, durante el sexto curso, asignaturas y prácticas tuteladas, bloques de simulación sobre aquellos trastornos relacionados con la salud mental, para que el médico esté bien preparado cuando acabe”.
Masclans también resaltó que “el médico debe alejarse de la hiperespecialización; la sociedad quiere al mejor médico, pero no quiere que este médico le vea sólo como unos pulmones, si es que tiene un problema de pulmones… el paciente a veces tiene más de un problema, y en muchas ocasiones incluso pueden estar relacionados. Es necesario un grado menos hospitalcentrista y con una visión más holística”.
Durante la presentación del estudio, Marga Esteve, presidenta del Hospital del Mar, destacó que este trabajo pionero con pacientes sobre los médicos del futuro les da una referencia de hacia dónde debe ir la medicina y la salud: “Los retos que tenemos como sociedad deben formar parte de la formación de los futuros médicos. Entre ellos, el envejecimiento, el protagonismo de la tecnología; el impacto de la IA; la prevención; los nuevos tratamientos, cada vez más individualizados; los pacientes, que están cada vez más informados…”. Esteve también aprovechó la ocasión para avanzar que “algún día –y esperemos que sea pronto– podremos integrar toda la escuela superior del grado de enfermería a la UPF”.
Por su parte, la consejera Olga Pané, quien hasta hace poco meses fue la gerente del Parc Salut Mar, reconoció sentirse como en casa antes de cerrar el acto de presentación del estudio, y se mostró muy partidaria “de empoderar a los pacientes” porque –concluyó– “atender a los pacientes de acuerdo con sus preferencias mejora la adherencia a los tratamientos e incluso mejora los resultados en salud”.
