Hace años las informaciones mediáticas sobre suicidios eran prácticamente inexistentes; siempre ha sido un tema difícil de tratar y resultaba más fácil silenciarlo. Sin embargo, recientemente se ha producido un cambio de sensibilidad y el suicidio ha dejado de ser un tabú para los medios de comunicación. Todo el mundo coincide en que el silencio no es la solución. Pero, ¿cómo podemos elaborar una información cuidadosa y responsable? Para dar respuesta a esta pregunta, el CIC y el Col·legi de Periodistes organizaron ayer una jornada de reflexión –con la colaboración de entidades, comunicadores y supervivientes– con el objetivo de analizar el tratamiento periodístico que se hace sobre el suicidio y proponer una actualización del código deontológico en el próximo Congreso de Periodistas de Catalunya que se celebrará los próximos 7 y 8 de noviembre en el CaixaForum de Barcelona.
La jornada se inició con la presentación del estudio de investigación Com informar sobre el suïcidi? Estat de la qüestió i recomanacions deontològiques per a periodistes, liderado por la profesora universitaria y periodista Rebeca Pardo, en el que se analizan 55 códigos deontológicos de todo el mundo. El informe recoge que la mayoría de códigos no mencionan la palabra “suicidio”, y se centra en tres que sí lo tratan con profundidad. Para llevar a cabo este estudio también se han consultado numerosas guías, documentos y recomendaciones realizadas por diferentes asociaciones y entidades sensibilizadas con el suicidio, que supone ya la primera causa de muerte no natural en Cataluña. El documento alerta de los riesgos que supone caer en sensacionalismos, dar demasiados detalles o banalizar los casos; también explica terminología necesaria: el efecto Werther o el celebrity-suicide effect, que se utiliza para explicar el aumento de tentativas y muertes por suicidio debido al efecto mimético que provoca la muerte por suicidio de una persona famosa, o el efecto Papageno, que es como se denomina al impacto positivo y de prevención que pueden tener los medio de comunicación. Por otro lado, Pardo también propuso incluir en el código deontológico un anexo dedicado al tratamiento del suicidio que sirva de pauta y sea una ayuda para los periodistas.
Comunicación y prevención
A continuación se dio paso a una mesa redonda –Com informem del suïcidi en el context de la salut mental– con distintos expertos. Entre ellos, el periodista Fidel Masreal, quien consideró que “cada vez informamos más y mejor sobre el suicidio”, pero habrá ocasiones en las que “entrarán en debate dos principios: el del periodismo, regulado por el código deontológicode la profesión, y los principios legítimos y necesarios de las entidades de éste y de otros sectores que no siempre coincidirán, porque hay muchos matices”. Por su parte, Ariadna Rogero, responsable de prensa y activismo en l’ONG por la salud mental Obertament, apuntó que “hay que perder el miedo a hablar del suicidio pero no se le puede perder el respeto”. El suicidio es “un problema de salud pública que se puede prevenir y los medios de comunicación deben ser aliados en esta prevención”, añadió. En esta línea también se posicionó el director de Salut Mental del Parc Taulí Sabadell y profesor de psiquiatría Diego J Palao Vidal, quien se mostró convencido de que los medios “pueden ayudar a cambiar la idea social de que el suicidio es un problema personal” y definió a los medios como “el cuarto pilar para la prevención del suicidio”.
Clara Rubio, presidenta de la Associació Catalana per la Prevenció del Suïcidi introdujo el concepto del “peso de la culpa” que muchas veces contienen las noticias e instó a los comunicadores y periodistas a “dar una visión más positiva de la vida” y a tratar los contenidos sobre el suicidio con la responsabilidad y profundidad que requieren. Por último, Anna Robert, psicóloga clínica y responsable de formación en el sindicato médico Metges de Catalunya, centró el debate en la perspectiva de género, destacando que “hay muchas chicas jóvenes que intentan suicidarse, que piden ayuda, mientras que los hombres se suicidan directamente”.
La jornada acogió algunas intervenciones más por parte de entidades y supervivientes, que aportaron su testimonio y enriquecieron esta reflexión sobre cuál es la mejor forma de informar sobre el suicidio. El periodismo ha pasado de silenciar el suicidio a hablar de ello. El siguiente paso es hacerlo bien para ayudar a romper el estigma que todavía envuelve este grave problema de salud pública.
